Welcome to the BioChemEs in Enzymology and Natural Products (BIEN Lab)!

Since the dawn of human society, natural products have been used to treat a wide range of health conditions, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, bacterial infections, and cardiovascular diseases. Microorganisms are key contributors to this field, producing structurally complex natural compounds that play crucial roles in biological processes such as virulence, biofilm formation, nutrient uptake, and metal scavenging. Although the genes and enzymes involved in natural product biosynthesis are often identified, a detailed understanding of the underlying enzymology remains limited. This bottleneck in knowledge presents a significant barrier to designing molecular scaffolds with precise functional groups and to boosting the production of high-value, pharmacologically relevant compounds—challenges our research is specifically designed to address.

In the BIEN lab, we recognize that scientific progress thrives in an environment where diverse perspectives are valued and inclusive practices are integral. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is foundational to our mission of advancing research in natural product biosynthesis and biocatalysis. We embrace and celebrate the diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences of our team members. We believe that a variety of perspectives enhances creativity, fosters innovation, and drives scientific excellence. Our commitment to diversity is reflected in our recruitment, mentorship, and professional development practices, ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have equal opportunities to contribute and succeed.

We strive to cultivate an inclusive culture where every team member feels respected, supported, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. Through initiatives such as inclusivity training programs, collaborative research opportunities, journal club/group meeting discussions,  and open forums for dialogue, we aim to build a community where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated.
